Miyawaki Report - Feb 2022
Hello Dear Miyawaki Cheerleaders (now 24 of us),
We are not alone!
a year ago we (GCCS, RSS) thought we were the only ones in Canada working on starting a Miyawaki Forest
today we are connected with a community of maybe 2 dozen people and projects (mostly in Ontario)
2 zoom meetings have been held (see my summaries) in the month of January 2022:
smaller Canadian Miyawaki Meetup 2
Elaine and Liz from Vancouver have officially joined the Richmond Miyawaki RSS (Richmond Secondary School) project. Welcome!
There are now 24 people subscribed to this monthly newsletter (i dont have a unsubscribe button yet so please let me know if you want out)
We now know the name of the Miyawaki Expert who set up the Yakima Nation (Washington State) Miyawaki Forest: Ethan Bryson and i have emailed him this descriptive letter which summarizes our current project status
the artists living in the new collective known as the "Birdhouse" in Richmond (one of whom, J, is the original catalyst of the RSS project) are planning various ways to assist us
several powerful local birders are also helping us
and I apologize to all the others whom i should also be acknowledging
Other Interesting Items:
Phoenix Nurseries on Number 6 road, Michael Wolfe's favorite local nursery, is looking for people to work
a tree is like a wine glass on a dinner plate (a brilliant analogy by Ontario's favorite tree expert, James Urban, who wrote an unaffordable classic tree planting book "Up by Roots" for US$100
University of Toronto student , Sarah Green, completed a very useful video capstone project comparing Miyawaki Forests to more traditional methods for a project in downtown Toronto (paper format here)
due to several requests, i am working on archiving the past year's Miyawaki Newsletters... should be ready for next month's newsletter
tomorrow,(Feb 2), at RSS, 26 Green Team members as well as 1-2 GCCS members and I will be doing a propagation by cuttings workshop in the Multi Purpose room at 8:30am
cheers,
Bruno
